Busan Specialty Coffee: Momos Coffee for Top Caliber Brews

Our journey through the Asia coffee scene continues after Taipei, This time in the city of Busan, the second-largest city and coffee trade hub of South Korea.

Our first stop brought us to Momos Coffee, which is a true gem that has captured attention from coffee enthusiasts worldwide since Jooyeon Jeon's impressive victory at the 2019 World Barista Championship (WBC). Momos has two branches in the city — the Jung-gu main branch and a second branch in Yeongdo, the starting point of Busan's shipbuilding industry.

Main Branch

Address: 20 Osige-ro, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, South Korea (Google Map)

Yeongdo Branch

Address: 160 Bongnaenaru-ro, Yeongdo-gu, Busan, South Korea (Google Map)

Stepping into the main branch felt like entering a serene garden. The interior boasts a wooden-toned style with bamboo framing at the entrance. The space is divided into sections, including an outdoor area, where locals can be found enjoying their coffee amid the autumn vibes.

Drinks of choice

Colombia Villa Betulia Pink Bourbon Anaerobic Natural — vibrant and lingering fruit notes of berries and grapes with chocolate finish (hot pour over)

Ecuador EI Chorora Sidra CM Washed — rich pear/apple type of notes and juice-like mouthfeel, overall it felt like apple juice, flawless execution (iced pour over)

About EI Chorora

EI Chorora is founded by two sisters Diana and Olinka Velez in Ecuador, which often showcases some of the finest beans produced in the country. They are well-known trailblazers in experimental processing techniques, a reputation further solidified when they won top two spots in the Taza Dorada (”Golden Cup”) competition 2019 in Ecuador.

What does CM mean?

CM refers to the Carbonic Maceration process, a method where coffee cherries are fermented in a sealed, oxygen-free environment filled with CO2. A controlled, CO2-rich environment to ferment the coffees gives better control on which yeasts and bacterias are active during fermentation, ultimately shaping more unique flavors.

TL;DR Highly recommended for travelers in Busan. If the main branch seems too far away, the branch next to the popular Yeongdo bridge is a good alternative, though rest assured it's worth the distance!
